Totem in Duncan |
Duncan is located midway between Victoria and
Nanaimo, and is less than an hours drive from either city. It is
convenient to all major ferry routes to and from the Mainland, and
to both Nanaimo and Victoria's airports.
The city of Duncan is one square mile and is packed
with interesting shops and services. With its nearly 80 totem poles,
is known as the City of Totems. The city's heritage and personality
is reflected in its totem poles, which can be found all over the
city. Historically, the totem poles have been a pictorial record of
a family's legendary and spiritual ancestry or their wealth and
standing in the community. They were also used as grave markers and
memorials to honor chiefs.
Duncan is a fine example of old tradition infused
with contemporary relevance and life. The city takes pride in its
accomplishments in business, in sports and the arts. Academics are
also an important factor with Malaspina University - College
offering education in both academic and vocational programs.
The Cowichan Region has a population of just over
70,000 people. Tourism is a major industry and the Quw'utsun'
Cultural and Conference Centre hosts more than 45,000 visitors a
year.
